Nationalism

Nationalism in simpler terms defined as an association of a group of people to a common set of beliefs and forming a symbolic common identity. Nationalism is linked to the identity of a group of individuals who are linked through common ideas that help to recognize them as a unit having one identity. Identity has been a factor that joins groups together by beliefs that hold them together and united. They relate to their individual self with the group and prioritize their collective identity. Their individual identity is defined in the context, of the collective identity that binds them. There is the unity of a different set of ideas in one holistic identity.

In contemporary politics, the emergence of multiple identities has created demarcations of how individuals belong to one set of beliefs that bring up their collective beliefs. Identity is close affinity or similarity among a group of people. This close affinity or shared ideas led to the formation of the nation have one common identity based on a set of ideas to project them to take the shape of nationalism.

Nationalism is a complex concept as it includes multiple factors that connect individuals to one another. The process of identity to nationalism goes through transition and change on the minds of the people to formulate a holistic identity that drives their objectives. It involves the selection of common values that connects the group.

Conventional nationalism can be defined as a group of people who have shared ideas to associate them with one nation. It is mainly restricted within the specific territory where people feel related to each other. They have common interests and goals to have a cohesive nation bounded by nationalism. Modern nationalism is broader in its reach and beyond the fixed territory. It connects people through shared values and beliefs to formulate a group identity to unite people into one nation. People living in different parts of the world feel related to common ideas into a cohesive nation.

Nationalism has been closely linked to conflicts. The increased awareness among masses towards the common identity of one nation can become the cause of conflict. The people who feel alienated develop grievance towards authorities.

For example, East Timor and Catalonia people demanded a separate nation based on their collective identity. The concept of nationalism is complex and has different layers to develop into a nation that has a shared identity in form of nationalism. It can be based on autonomy, regional affiliation, and grievances of one particular group towards their government. It is shaped by different factors that connect one group towards a nation having a cohesive identity. The lack of clarity can lead to more grievances among groups who feel alienated from the rest of the nation.

Melting Glaciers in Antarctic Region

Satellite images show the 1,200sq km (463sq miles) Conger Ice Shelf collapsed completely in March. According to studies by scientists, the large chunks of ice attached to the land acts as a buffer to prevent ice from melting and flowing into the ocean increasing the risk of submergence due to a rise in sea level on the land areas. The areas on coastlines are in danger of receding land areas due to the rise in sea levels. The temperature reaching 40C (70F) above normal in parts of East Antarctica, is unusual for the region during this time of the year. Scientists, consider the melting of ice in Antarctica is likely to increase the risk of flooding. The rapid pace of melting of ice has adverse effects on the land adjoining the ocean. Melting of ice is creating an effect Neff described as “a fire hose of moisture phenomenon. The rate of climate change is three times warmer in the Antarctic than in the Arctic Ocean. In the context of factors, first and foremost is the increase in greenhous...
