Cold War analogy has been used to condemn the Ukraine war. The Post-Cold War era states in case of conflict adopt neutral policies to avoid becoming part of bloc politics to ensure their security and to minimize the spillage of war to disrupt the world order. In a multi-polar world, countries opt for independent policies. The countries support issues that collectively impact the stability of the world. The polarization was evident between the two blocs. The end of the Cold War after the disintegration former USSR led to the emergence of other powers particularly China has drastically changed the power equation. China opposed the polarization of the world and collaborates with other emerging powers to stabilize the world. China is apprehensive of one power or bloc dictating policies of global politics.
Détente policy
of the cold war is applied to ease tensions between US and Russia. They have held
talks on the reduction of Strategic Arms to reduce their strategic weapons. The
discussions were held after the annexation of Crimea. Russia opposed Ukraine to become part of the NATO
security umbrella and invade Ukraine. The invasion of Ukraine would bring the world to the brink of another conflict that poses threat to the world peace. At the regional level, the tensions between Russia and the Western security alliance have
made the situation worse for Ukraine. The war was the result of the power politics
or policy differences between Russia and Western-backed NATO.
Russia has made an alliance with Belarus force Ukraine to a ceasefire. They have conducted a military exercise with Belarus in 2022. Belarus considers Russia a close ally and secures them from external aggression. Alexander Lukashenko came to power after the support of Russia to cope with the sanctions from the Western bloc. Belarus shares a border with three NATO states and is labeled a vassal state of Russia. The Russian sphere of influence in Eastern Europe was challenged by the Western-backed NATO.
The exiled opposition
leaders differentiate Ukraine and Belarus on one factor. Ukraine opposed the military operation of
Russia. Whereas, Belarus has invited Russia for their security. The Polish-Lithuanian
border known as the Suwałki Corridor is vital for Russia to keep its sphere
of influence in Eastern Europe. The experts are of the view that the Suwalki
Corridor is a passage that connects Russia with Belarus on the far-western
enclave of Kaliningrad. Belarus support Russia to maintain their influence in
the Eastern Europe region. If Russian
forces are able to take control of the Sulwalki corridor they cut support of NATO
for Lithuania and Baltic states.
The US and Western alliance are using the diplomatic front to gain the support of emerging powers to limit Russian invasion. The talks are being held with world leaders to pressure Russia to end the war in Ukraine. They have imposed sanctions on Russia to restrict their military intervention in Ukraine. The US has blocked the oil and gas imports from Russia to oppose their invasion of Ukraine. United Nations have passed resolutions to oppose the use of military might of Russia and provide safe passage for the civilians on humanitarian grounds.
