Burkina Faso became a concern for the World after the replacement of the 27-year rule of Blaise and he was forced to step down as a result of protests of masses against their ruler. It was due to the movement of people through Arab Spring to make their countries more democratic and equitable for their citizens. The people stood up against the injustices and uneven distribution of resources in their country.
In the context, of the humanitarian crisis in Burkina Faso,20 million people, need urgent humanitarian assistance. 1.7 million people have also been displaced due to uncertain security situations and frequent attacks by rebel groups. Political violence was the root cause of unrest. The rebel groups want autonomy and refuse to work with their hovering authorities. Mali became the flashpoint of conflict in the Sahel region.
The Burkinabe military government was not challenged by people who oppose their rule and protested for an equitable system of governance for them. The Arab Spring became the impetus for regime change in the African region led by masses. The civil society actively campaigned against their government to bring change in their political system and revamp their political institutions to safeguard the rights of their citizens. The European Union’s Task Force was working in the Niger and Burkina Faso for the counterterrorism operations. They have withdrawn their forces to strengthen the local forces to ensure their security from terror groups and hold talks with rebel groups to end the conflict in the Sahel region.
According to experts, counter-terrorism efforts can be useful through the participation of rebel groups and addressing their grievances towards their government. The stability in Mali is essential for the security of the whole region. The unrest in one part of the Sahel region can cause instability for other countries.
