Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty(START): New Developments

The recent round of discussions was held in February 2019 to reduce weapon control by Trump. Both countries showed a willingness to decrease the number of arms to the limit set by them. The arm reduction discussions included all the arms including nuclear arms to put a limit to mutually the number of arms. Due to the disagreement on the talks and it ended without any fruitful results.

The US showed apprehensions on Russia by expressing their concern over their strategic offensive arms to the limit decided by both countries during the discussions. Russia had denied any claims of an increase in its strategic arms.

The trust deficit between US and Russia is a root cause that hinders the arms race. The talks to decrease their missiles and discontinue new missile systems that can create an imbalance. It can become impetuous for stimulating a new arms race among the major states.  It can be avoided by initiating confidence-building measures between US and Russia.

In the recent round of new developments, China was added to trilateral strategic arms talks. China was made part of major strategic arms reduction, efforts are made to curtail the spread of arms and to reduce existing weapons to decrease their chances of use in case of conflict. The new round of discussions concluded without a major breakthrough among US and Russia.

All the stakeholders have shown their interest in limiting arms to sustain the stability of the world. One of the major features was to decrease the deployed Submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) and Intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) facilities. The aim was to decrease the infrastructure requires to keep these functional and repairs required in case of any damage to facilities for ballistic missiles.

The sustainable peace of the world can only be possible through mutual efforts of all the parties to make the world more stable. Mutual agreements or treaties are used to take all stakeholders on board to reduce the arms race at the global level. The role of all states mainly major states is significant in determining the future of the arms race. They have to put a limit and the cost of the arms race outweighs the benefits for states. The international treaties particularly, the strategic reduction treaty is to focus on reducing the race of missile development that can threaten the peace of the world.

Melting Glaciers in Antarctic Region

Satellite images show the 1,200sq km (463sq miles) Conger Ice Shelf collapsed completely in March. According to studies by scientists, the large chunks of ice attached to the land acts as a buffer to prevent ice from melting and flowing into the ocean increasing the risk of submergence due to a rise in sea level on the land areas. The areas on coastlines are in danger of receding land areas due to the rise in sea levels. The temperature reaching 40C (70F) above normal in parts of East Antarctica, is unusual for the region during this time of the year. Scientists, consider the melting of ice in Antarctica is likely to increase the risk of flooding. The rapid pace of melting of ice has adverse effects on the land adjoining the ocean. Melting of ice is creating an effect Neff described as “a fire hose of moisture phenomenon. The rate of climate change is three times warmer in the Antarctic than in the Arctic Ocean. In the context of factors, first and foremost is the increase in greenhous...

Heat Wave in Europe : 2022

A wildfire  erupted in different parts of Europe amid the heat wave creating havoc for people.   Scientists have linked wildfire to climate change which has become a major concern that is leading to extreme weather conditions. The scourging heat has contributed to increasing in wildfires that led to the excavation of people. The temperature is expected to reach 40 Celsius in different parts of Europe as per the health advisory issued by countries in Europe.     Portugal and Spain are the most affected countries by the recent wave of heat waves. The firefighters are fighting to extinguish the wildfire and rescue the operation of people stranded in the wildfire. Scientists have predicted more wildfires in the coming years. In Portugal, five regions were affected areas due to heat waves where the temperature rose to 47 Celsius.  Wildfires have destroyed 30,000 hectares of land in Portugal and 100 people have lost their lives due to wildfires.
