Colour revolutions in Baltic and Eastern Europe are the result of the need for more autonomy or to challenge Russian growing influence. That’s the question that re-emerges in case of changing dynamics in the Eastern Europe region. For example, Ukraine became the flashpoint in global politics after Russian forces beefed up at the Ukrainian border. Although Russia has assured of non-inference into the sovereignty of Ukraine experts are apprehensive of Russia's intentions.
The Orange Revolution in Ukraine is a recent example of one of the major colour revolutions in post-communists in Eastern Europe. The protests of people led to the replacement of undemocratic governments and called a significant shift in the politics of Russia towards Eastern European states. The protests were a consequence of a radical change and making countries more democratic by involving public opinion in their governing procedures. The demand for making their political system more transparent using democratic values.
How do these color revolutions Influence or shape regional politics? That’s the question that was the point of discussion for analysts and political experts since the start of the color revolutions in the region. The success of these revolutions was not something that became apparent in regional politics. The reason for not gaining momentum was a failure to overhaul their political institutions and remains limited to holding elections. The implementation of reforms is still a challenge for the region.
Kyrgyzstan is another major country that witness a major transition after the restoration of constitutions power was given to parliament. Civil unrest erupted between ethnic Uzbeks and Kyrgyz in the south of Kyrgyzstan. After the clashes, Uzbeks fled the country and the Kyrgyz president formulated a government and was unable to introduce reforms to ensure rule of law in the country. The critics were of the view that a stable democratic government would not be possible without reforming political institutions and transparency in the electoral process.
The recent episode of the Ukraine crisis has its roots in color revolutions. One bloc within Ukraine is in favor of joining the Western security alliance NATO. Their rationale to improve the security situation is based on achieving security from Russian military might. The Ukrainian leadership has tilted towards the Western security alliance to make their country more independent and free from Russian influence. The future of Ukraine is too early to say whether they will join NATO or not. It will become clearer in the coming few months after analysing all aspects of the crisis in Ukraine.
